CHM Associate Program:  Historical Roots

Back

Couples like CHM Associates Anthony and Jean Luke are encouraged to join the CHM Associate program. The CHM Associate Program is one of the earliest programs of its kind among contemporary communities of women religious.

Established in 1971 as an aspect of the renewal of religious life mandated by the Second Vatican Council, the CHM community created the Associate Program to allow single men and women, couples and former members of the community to participate in the spirit and work of the Congregation.

The associates’ relationship to the community has grown naturally.  All receive community mailings and many participate in workshops and the annual summer Assembly. They share meals, liturgies, retreats and times of prayer wherever possible and meaningful. Often, associates comment on the intellectual and spiritual stimulation they receive from this contact.

As part of the CHM Annual Assembly, CHM Associates Day offers an opportunity to share the joy of spirit and community. From left: Con-E Osmers, Maria Delsing, Pat Knopick, Jan Pullella and Phyllis Ammeter.

They also value the sisters as friends and as companions on the journey of faith.  Many say that as an associate, they feel that they are part of a “bigger-than-myself” effort toward social change and influencing society with values of justice and peace.

The Congregation, in turn, appreciates the associates’ support and encouragement of community works and policies.  It especially values the professional voice and expertise that many associates provide on various social, cultural and religious topics that concern the community.
